I love this game and I want to share my feedback.

  • Hello all, if you would be so kind as to take a moment to read my feedback on the game, I greatly appreciate it and thank you in advance.

I'll start with some background info.

I have been looking for a game like this for almost the past 5 years. I've been gaming for the past 20 years.

So you can imagine my excitement when, upon discovering this game in January of this year.

I first learned about it after just randomly browsing the Steam store. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect at first, but when I loaded it up and it had that familiar Minecraft feel, I knew I was in for a treat.

The reason I love this game, I'll be honest, is because this is what I kinda always wished for back when I first started playing Minecraft 5 years ago. I always wanted more, better graphics, more realism, but without sacrificing the game mechanics and freedom that make a sandbox building game truly great.

So, the obligatory TLDR is: "I love Rising World because it's like Minecraft on crack." Ok, now that that's out of the way... :P

This game really is special. Every time I load up a new world I can just sit there relaxed and smiling before I even do anything. It has a sort of calming-like effect on me.

One of my favorite things about this game is that the building blocks are epic. Red, you have done a fantastic job in creating a universal block palette that can pretty much be used to build anything from ancient Greek/Roman, medieval, Victorian, all the way up to contemporary and modern styles. The possibilities are like literally endless. And this actually solves a problem for me as well. Because one of the things I don't like about Minecraft is not having a universal texture pack that can do it all. Well, Rising World can do it all! And I am so thankful that all the blocks have all different types like stairs, slabs etc..

The worlds are beautiful and they look very realistic. They are very fun to explore and sometimes I find some really scenic places for building. It's like going on a virtual nature walk. I never have to leave my house in real life again! Haha, just kidding.

I love that the building is simple and easy like Minecraft and that there's no limits on it.

I'm so glad that you have EPIC lakes and oceans in the game because some sandbox games these days don't have water, so I am extremely grateful for that, as I am obsessed with lakes. In fact, just because the maps have water is one of the main reasons I play this. I have found some really cool mind-blowing lakes, (don't have any screen shots though, sorry).

You've done a great job on the caves and dungeons too.

Ok, now I'd like to humbly offer some of my game content suggestions. I'll start with what I feel is the most reasonable/easiest and work my way down. (Keep in mind that I am not a game developer so I don't know how hard it is, so please forgive me if any of my suggestions seem unreasonable to you).

Firstly, a simple change that i'd like to suggest is a higher reward rate in stone mining. I think it's just a little bit annoying :) when you only get like 1 or 2 stone per dig, as when building even a medium size building that uses a lot of stone, it takes awhile and hurts my mouse finger after digging like 1000 stone or more, lol :D . I would suggest like 3,5,7 or even 5,7,10 instead of 1,2,3 on the stone. I think wood chopping is fine though since we get a higher amount for making wood blocks. Although I also completely understand why you have it this way if you want it to feel more realistic.

Secondly, even though there is a lot of building blocks in the game already, I would love to see even more. Perhaps even more variants of cobblestone, stonebricks, and perhaps also a half-timber style block. Google "half-timbering", "tudor house", or "medieval building" if you don't know what I mean. Basically like a block that is white like plaster but with two wooden beams on each edge to look like a medieval building. It would be much, much easier than placing wooden beams manually. In fact if you added a medieval/tudor style block, I would be over the moon happy. :D

Blocks with roof shingle textures of different types would be really useful.

Thirdly, I know it's been discussed before in one of my recent posts, but I think that the worlds should have a larger playable area. I know that they're infinite and I've heard that currently it's about like 10,000x10,000 before it starts getting laggy or whatever (personally I've gone 20,000 blocks out with no problems, but I have a beast computer), and I know that you said it's a low priority, but in my opinion that should be a higher priority. I mean this in the best possible way. :)

Also, it would be one of the greatest games ever made if you could implement technology like train building tools, cars, planes, boats, airplanes etc. OMG that would be the coolest thing ever.

One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that the actual main reason I love this game is because it has a seed system for the maps, and that they are infinite in number, randomly generated and procedural/infinite in size. Most games these days don't have that, aside from Minecraft. Infinite randomly procedurally generated maps are my absolute favorite thing in modern gaming because every time you start up a world it won't be the same as the last and I love love love that. It makes it feel like a true adventure exploring a new world, and to me, that is more entertaining than almost anything else in gaming. So for the seed world system you have created one of the best things ever in gaming history in my opinion.

Ok, another suggestion I have, and this is the one I want the most, is rivers. Please, I beg you, we need rivers! :D The lakes are epic, but having rivers as well would make the world's even better and more realistic.

Another suggestion I have is to add more decoration blocks for different styles. For example, there's a pretty good variety of decorating blocks like the medieval drawbridge, modern sofas and electric lights etc., but i'd love to see this expanded into having more rustic stuff like old European medieval and renaissance style furniture and decorative blocks and items.

Also rideable horses would be epic.

And lastly, will there ever be real time shadows in the game? Hopefully that wouldn't be too hard on the graphics.

That's about all I can think of for right now, i'm sure i'm forgetting to add stuff, but I don't want this post to get too long.

In summary, thank you so very much for reading this Red and to the community as well. I love and appreciate this game so much because it's basically the closest thing possible to my "dream game". Know that I support you and this game, Red. I don't usually write long forum posts with my feedback and opinions as i'm a bit shy to say too much/certain things. Please keep up the fantastic work and please please please finish this lovely game.

    Sincerely,

Alpha_Wolf777 aka "Kevin" in real life, from California, USA

  • Another thing that I need to add:

I am extremely grateful and thankful and I love love love the fact that this game can be played offline. That is actually the absolute most important feature in a game for me. Because I prefer having a game on my hard drive as opposed to having to rely on a server, because I don't always have a stable internet connection so it's nice to know that I can play this game offline as I also prefer playing alone in my own world. :D

  • Thank you very much for your kind words, I'm happy to hear that you like the game :)

Firstly, a simple change that i'd like to suggest is a higher reward rate in stone mining

Probably this isn't a bad idea. Well, one of the next updates introduce higher tier tools (which speed up the mining process). Once they're available, we'll tweak the whole mining process (and adjust the mining speed as well as the reward rate) ;)

Secondly, even though there is a lot of building blocks in the game already, I would love to see even more. Perhaps even more variants of cobblestone, stonebricks, and perhaps also a half-timber style block

Actually it is our intention to introduce more textures, however, unfortunately this has an impact on the overall performance (but there is still some room for some additional textures). Originally we also wanted to rework and replace some of the existing textures, but obviously this would cause a lot of trouble for existing worlds (so we won't touch existing textures until the game has more extensive support for texture packs [e.g. serverside texture packs]).

Blocks with roof shingle textures of different types would be really useful.

That's true, roof textures are really missing. However, in order to avoid having flat roof textures, we first want to wait until parallax mapping is implemented. If this provides satisfying results for roof textures, they will be added, otherwise there will be probably a special roof construction element or something like that.

Thirdly, I know it's been discussed before in one of my recent posts, but I think that the worlds should have a larger playable area

The world is indeed infinite (at least the world generation isn't restricted), but you will run into precision issues (rounding errors) sooner or later. These issues become noticeable at around 10,000 and are getting worse the further you travel (somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 it becomes unplayable), so it's recommendable to stay within the 10,000x10,000 boundaries.
Unfortunately I have no ETA when the "real" infinite world will be finally available ( @DaBoiye: I just used my 'ETA' hotkey again :D), first we really need to get some other stuff ready (especially the new player models) ^^

Also, it would be one of the greatest games ever made if you could implement technology like train building tools, cars, planes, boats, airplanes etc. OMG that would be the coolest thing ever.

At least trains, cars and boats/shipts are planned :) It's likely that there will be also some basic aircrafts at some point (e.g. a glider, and/or a hot air balloon). Unfortunately I can't say much about planes or other aircrafts (like helicopters), maybe they will be added once the game leaves early access ;)

Ok, another suggestion I have, and this is the one I want the most, is rivers. Please, I beg you, we need rivers!

I'd love to add rivers, unfortunately it's quite tricky to add proper rivers to the bumpy terrain. First we need to get dynamic water ready. Actually it's also our intention to rework the terrain generation in the future, maybe rivers will be part of these changes.

Also rideable horses would be epic.

Rideable horses (as well as camels and donkeys) are in the works. They will be added after the player models update :)

And lastly, will there ever be real time shadows in the game? Hopefully that wouldn't be too hard on the graphics.

Real time shadows are definitely planned. They will have an impact on the performance of course, but there's anyway some room for optimizations. I'm pretty sure that shadows will greatly improve the overall appearance of the game^^

  • "I love Rising World because it's like Minecraft on crack."

I hear this analogy quite often but yeah, the feeling is the same. Istarted gaming over 20 years ago but lost interest between High School and Half Life 2 then lost interest again. It wasn't until Minecraft came around that my interest renewed. Then when I stumbled across Rising World I picked it up in a heardbeat as it satisfied my desire for a non-blocky type of Minecraft game. I'm really looking forward to seeing the game reach completion. And all the stuff Red mentioned above is going to be awesome once implemented.

Yes, I'm glad to see that we share the same thoughts on it. :)

  • Ah, nice posts here with some nice feedback.

Yeah, this really needs to be looked at after the 'Player Models & Animation Update', and the version 2 of that update adding in horses, boats and such. 10,000x10,000 starts to become too small when you head in one direction. Granted, we could go elsewhere in another direction, yet....yeah. I'm keeping my other 4 directions intact for other updates requiring new chunks. Who knows where horses shall spawn (old or new chunks). I still have room to play with so we'll see how important this shall become with the next two updates. When Red51 adds in trains then he truly must look at this seriously. Trying to say this as politely as I can when we can venture further & farther more reliably.

Also, it would be one of the greatest games ever made if you could implement technology like train building tools, cars, planes, boats, airplanes etc. OMG that would be the coolest thing ever.

We're all looking forward to seeing trains, cars, & boats. It be awesome to see how they handle that both me & Harv are both stockpiling on iron ore in hopes of building a united railway network. Can't wait to see how trains shall effect our RW life. I have plans of how I'd also loop the train around.

I do hope we gain a Euro Truck Sim 2 style movement where you also have to use blinkers, and that there's an active horn, and such for cars & other related vehicles. Being able to customize oyur vehicles, while also having ETS2 & ATS styled trucks for those 'long hauls'.

Even having horses & those simple carts shall be a fun feature. Being able to customize your horse, being able to drag that wagon, and etc. Everything shall be neat. Horses need that 'auto-throttle' found in 'Mount & Blade: Warband' game where you can set a speed and it'll run at that speed. I need to play it again for the horse 'feel' again.

Ok, another suggestion I have, and this is the one I want the most, is rivers. Please, I beg you, we need rivers! The lakes are epic, but having rivers as well would make the world's even better and more realistic.

Yeah, at least rivers should be a thing, and I wouldn't mind them conflicting a bit here and there with the terrain. We're still playing in a test sandbox, yet have to warn people in advance to blueprint their builds before this update. Try and get them (rivers) to connect from one lake to the next, as with an ocean, maybe avoiding mountains but going through everything else. Code them to only generate at a certain elevation, or to point downward from a mountain side. Not trying to sound 'know it all', just some possible suggestions.

You did say it's tricky, but if it's a biome divider then I'd say it should work in some fashion. I can wait when you fiddle with this after the player models stuff so whatever ends up working we'll take it.

Curious what these rounding errors are in a simplified manner. Yeah, that'll be an issue when we gain horses & trains to play with, more so on heavier populated servers. Thankfully, I'm on a small server still building in a confined space that I can handle this a bit. The thing is, when you're seeking out biomes it becomes an issue where you travel far & wide. Hmm....

Yeah, the player models needs to be a priority, then if possible, see about rivers & upping the stability. If not, then I guess we just gotta live with what you have planned after that.

  • I'm so excited to have found this game and have the opportunity to see it grow from a young age (games age). Keep up the good work, I keep spreading the word!
