What ping times are you fellas getting?

Gday everyone,

I've been looking into this game for some weeks now, and was ready to bite the bullet and buy it soon, but as with everything I always do my own due diligence first. Part of this involved testing whether I'd get acceptable pings to servers and the results don't appear promising. This isn't a deal breaker by any stretch of the imagination because I've never played any multiuser games before but you lot all seem like a decent bunch so I thought I might give it a go

RWS1 (Russia) 421ms

Valhala (Germany) 315ms

Nemesis (UK) 331ms

There were no Australian servers (where I am) available so I guess if I do online it will have to be in a country over 15,000kms away one way or another heh. Since it's not pvp I'm guessing the latency might not be such an issue? What pings do you guys get?

Well, my intention of waiting until the update to purchase finally failed and I bought the game today.

Am happy so far, even though I got lost (I purposely headed towards the sun at dawn after sleeping - ie heading east, but for some reason the sun disappeared altogether for a period of time when I was making my way back (ie keeping sun behind me to make sure I was heading west)). Anyway, that aside my issue is connecting to a server:

I try to connect and straight away get kicked because I don't have a username or account or something. I can't find where to create an account. On the main menu it says "unknown user: offline" or something - even though I am definitely online.

In short, how do I create an account to connect to servers to look at all the stuff you guys have done? (I'm not ready to play multiplayer yet - I wanna learn the ropes first - just look around ) Cheers.

Yep - I bought it off steam.

Whether I load from steam, or from the command line (as demonstrated above) the results are the same

Nope - I'm running Slackware - no CPU hogging antivirus, anti malware required though of course I do run iptables.

I'm reasonably adept tech wise (B.Comp Sci '98) so I can give you anything from running processes to ip configurations

And as shown in the terminal output - connections to online servers are showing (as well as the offline ones). But for some reason I don't exist

Re 1. I hope this is the case, but I'm not so sure
Re 2. I'm on ADSL2 at around 1 Meg a second, as I say - servers to connect to show up.
Re 3. No problem on that front whatsoever. Not a doubt in my mind,
Re 4. I don't know what. My firewall rules are solid (every other steam game works).
Re rebooting - that only fixes windows problems

It's a deeper issue than the run of the mill "mah gamez is not workin" that is so often heard these days. It's why I loaded the executable using java directly from a command line to show what it spits out.

On the one hand it's not a pressing issue at this stage because single player works fine, yet a large part of why I bought the game was to get ideas from you guys on the servers because my imagination is near non existant heh.. plus this is the first community I've felt confident enough to actually do multiplayer in as opposed to say rust and Cities Skylines has no multiplayer. Lets just say for me the community was a big part in the purchase coz you're all pretty laid back, which by extension means I'd like to wander the worlds everyone has created.
