Juggernaut, I'm technically competent but I have never hosted any game server before. I know your server has been around for a long time and is busy. I set up my server on a whim 2 weeks ago. I do need to go through and configure many settings still. And yes, I could leave it password protected until then. But then how would I notice issues like this?

Since all I have done is build some of the spawn area (and that's been blueprinted anyway), I'm not too concerned with protecting anything yet. Also I plan to transfer the server to another machine soon. Consider it a "soft opening" for now, I plan to put it up on the server announcements page whenever I get it ready.

Anyway, I'm hoping that RW never attracts significant numbers of childish people like Boz. As you know, when a server gets big or busy you will always need some active human moderation. Permissions wouldn't prevent someone from swearing in the chat, political/conspiracy rants, building an offensive structure, posting pornographic posters... there's just so many ways a troll can get creative!

I have also banned that person from my server after a similar experience. At least they just edited my signs. Also tried to "frame" another player by signing the signs as someone else, but I checked the logs =P

Bozbird, if you are reading this.... why? If you want to grief, why not go to a more mainstream MMO, like Minecraft or Roblox. I'm sure you'd get more of a rise out of people there.

Recently I have set up a public server, and have been building the spawn area, etc. For no particular reasons, I decided to set the world spawn to the "center" of the world coordinates, so at approximately (0, 100, 0).

Anyway, I noticed something interesting! There appears to be a cloud of flies... at least that's what they look like? Is this an Easter egg that occurs at this location in every world generation? (I guess I could load a single player world and check myself.) Screenshots attached.

A fun idea, I appreciated discovering it! I hope I'm not ruining it for too many people by posting. I have decided to leave a little room for the sacred flies in my build, lol.

I'm just setting up my new server's spawn area, and I need to remove a large volume of ocean water within some walls I have already built. Is there a straightforward way to do this with console commands? Or do I just need to fill the area with blocks and then remove them...

On this note, an item that allows water removal would be helpful at some point (like the sponge in Minecraft). Maybe a pump?

    Thanks in advance!

P.S. The server is "A server with no name" for now =P

Update: I reinstalled with no issues, so I think it was a hardware issue (probably my aging SSD). As for /showareas not working, I realized that I need to type it in the console now

    Thanks

Today I opened Steam and tried to load RW. Steam said "updating", which seemed odd since I already have the most recent update. I checked 30 minutes later, and it was still at 0% updated. So I went to the steam beta options for the game, switched it back to the Java Version. Steam started to download that content, then I switched it back to the beta version. Steam then downloaded the entire game. After that, I was able to run the game, and log onto a server. I played for a while without issue, but it seemed that /showareas wasn't working, so I tried to log off and back in. The server (Wild Frontiers in case it matters) loaded to 10 percent, then I got an unhandled exception. I tried to click report error and the game crashed completely. I loaded it again, and had the exact same error. This time I copied the text, it is pasted below. Currently I toggled the beta setting again, and it is re-downloading the whole game again. Also, I didn't try to load single player, but the error message suggests it's multiplayer issue.

Hoping for some resolution so I can play again! Thanks in advance.

Oh great, thanks for the explanation on that too! Also thank you to James and Yahwho! I'll set up the "spawn greeting area" now and turn off password protection when that's ready. This game has come a long way. I look forward to seeing deserts in the new version!

Yay, I figured it out! Turned out I need to change the external addresses to the ones ending in 206 in the port forward menu, while using the 205 address for everything else. Not sure why that worked, but it did. Looks like lots of other people had issues with this particular Spectrum modem/router combo, because of how the router provisions the static IP. Apparently this is why the router with special firmware is required for a static IP on spectrum business.

Now I need to figure out plugins. I have enabled password protection for now. I'm only seeing the Java version of Area Protection on the site, but on the Green Valleys server there seems to be new area protection. Is that released yet?

Yahwho, sorry I didn't state it clearly initially. I was trying to convey some troubleshooting nformation. I meant that just port 4254 was actually opening despite the correct range of ports being set up under port forwarding, which seemed off. Thanks!

    Also the other port:

I do have "two different IPs", the one ending in 205 that it's connecting on now, as well as the same first three bytes ending in 206. I was given both when I set up my connection, and frankly have never understood the difference. I only pay for one static IP. Perhaps I'm missing something well-known about networking here.

This line from the log seems to indicate this IP mismatch is indeed the problem:

    Code
[STEAM] Server connected, public IP -> 98.154.126.206

    Here is connection_log_4254:

James: I am running from business-class internet on an old gaming PC. It is currently online still, just logged in to check. I think I'm also experiencing some ISP support issue here. I'm testing it from my home internet, so a different IP. How did you resolve it in your case? My iSP is Spectrum.

Yahwho: I didn't state this clearly, but I do have ports 4253-4259 open on the router's port forwarding and windows firewall. When I test the ports with a port checker I only see 4254 open. When I test the open ports again when I have a user account logged onto the server, I see 4254 and 4255 open.

I have it blank, followed the other posts about that while getting it started. I can log in fine from a different router, so it's online. Just port 4254 is open, other ports open while I'm logged in with at least 1 account, but otherwise closed. Here is the server config file.

Hi, I've been playing for a long time and decided to try setting up a server. The server starts and I am able to log in using the IP, but it doesn't show up in the public server list. Port 4254 is open. I logged in using my player account and also used a friend's steam account to log in with the manual IP entry, which both worked well. Which logs can I post? The IP is 98.154.126.205 and the name should come up as "Angzarr"., password protected.

    Thanks!
