Many of you may or may not know this, and I am hesitant to bring it up, as it may be changed in a future update. Seeds you plant are not required to be outdoors/in greenhouses. They don't even need sunlight. Or any light at all, for that matter. I tested this with hemp, potato, tomato, corn, watermelon, and wheat seeds, and they all grew. Here is what I did.
- I mined some soft dirt, regular dirt or forest, type is irrelevant.
- found and explored deep into a cave.
- I used my pickaxe to create an area for my field, then used the sledgehammer to level it flat.
- I took my dirt, replaced the now level stone floor with dirt, then tilled the dirt with my hoe.
- Planted seeds.
That's it, simply by utilizing the games terraforming feature, you can freely grow crops underground. Perfect for those of you (like me) that love to do subterranean building, and have crops on the surface. No you know, you don't need to.
