turning stairs in all directions

I like using stairs for detail on my builds i was wondering if it is possible to make the stairs move in all direction this will remove some of the current limitation when building

before place the stairs you can trun them in 90 degree with the arrow key left or right. other objects can even turn with the up and down arrow. i guess left and right are limited to the block item's.

I have gathered that the block systems is not very flexible so changes in the system take a bit of work.
But the Devs have stated they are working on allowing inverted stairs, ramps on their sides, and adding half blocks from previous Suggestions.
