Im having real problems adding coal to the furnace any ideas?

Make sure you access the small door on the left side (at the bottom of the furnace) to refuel the furnace. The journal (key J) also contains some information about that. Just open the small hatch, hold some coal in your hands and click on the "hole" to place it there
