I tried the setspawn command and sleeping, even getting the "Default Spawnposition has been changed" message but every time I respawn, I do so at the original spot, not the new. Can anyone help?

Where do you spawn exactly? The setspawn command only updates the default spawn position, but if a spawn point is set by sleeping in a bed, tent or shelter, you will always respawn there (until you remove this object).
