I have an mac osx 10.6.8 and when I try to open the game up on steam it crashes and says steam osx has exited and sometimes my mac crashes too and I have to restart my computer. Will updating my OSX help?

I plan to get the game but I want to know if below OSX 10.9 on Mac will there be a restriction keeping me from running the game? I have version 10.6.8.
