While that would work, scaffolding appeals to me more. Firstly, a re-usable construction aid is not as wasteful of resources as making (and later destroying) some temporary structure to climb on, and secondly as it has a more realistic look. (ie, looking at some ongoing construction you might say "this building is being worked on" rather than "why would anyone build stairs out there?")

I personally like the way the compass is done in 7DaysToDie, where your spawn is shown as a small house icon in the correct direction, and also an icon for the last place you died. (So you can go and get your stuff you dropped if you need to.)

Also, a half height door would be useful, to use for fences etc. My preference though would be for doors to be resizeable in the same way as window frames currently are.
