Minigames

  • RW is a great game to have entertaining Minigames in it that give another reason to play aside the typical building or survival. I consider them as a nice twist. Its important though that these games should not be a mandatory part of the game and not give any value or reward that is either required for the game or not achievable by other means. Im also thinking about something like the Piano in Java, which was such a nice addition, even though most players won´t ever use it (inclusive myself - im absolutely non-musical).

Some ideas/examples that come to my mind:

    - fishing. In Java already implemented and not too difficult. Just wait a bit and click with the right timing.

    - metal detecting - suggested that somewhere else already. Use the metal detector and have a x% chance to find something else than ores (i.e. coin, jewlery or as insider-joke some bottle caps). Reward would be some collectables that can be displayed or even traded but nothing that is required to play

    - a whistle - with maybe 3 or 4 tones only. each tone or combination has a x% chance to attract some wild animals or maybe give a companion (i.e. dog) a command. As this can be an advantage and not everyone would like to fiddle out the correct combination there should be other means to reach the same goal (i.e. the right food to attract animals).

    - whittling - finding some "blueprints" how to carve certain decorative objects in chests or dungeons. Then use a knife and a wooden stick or log. Doing the right movements as described in the "blueprint" will perform carving actions and step by step turn the wood into the decorative object. If doing the wrong movement with the knife it results in a fail.

  • I agree that minigames and interactive objects are always a great thing! It's definitely our intention to add the piano to the new version, actually we've already done some preparations for it, so it should be ready soon :)

Back then for the Java version, it was also our intention to add some other games like chess, card games and smaller video games (similar to games like space invaders, pong etc). In multiplayer, you could even play these games with other people. We've done a few preparations for that, but unfortunately it never made it into the game... however, we still want to add that to the new version (but it has a lower priority at the moment) :D

I very much like the metal detecting idea  It's definitely on our to-do list. The whittling suggestion also sounds interesting, we just have to think about how this could be implemented. We also have to think about the whistle idea... it sounds interesting, but it could be a bit overwhelming for the player if he gets too many "whistle-options" :drunk:

Whittling could be done similar to how i.e. a tree changes its texture when hit with an axe. But of course it needs to be done with the right movements. I imagine a kind of popup-window that shows a floating piece of wood (turnable 360 degrees) and a whittling knive. With the Mouse you can freely move the knive but only if you do the right movements across the wood it will cause the change of texture until its looking like the object you want.

Basically it would not be necessary to find plans to do that. But without the exact movements it would result in a fail and the piece of wood gets destroyed.
