Happened to me twice now, I cant alt tab back in after alt tabbing out.
It seems to happen if I alt tab out when steam overlay is open.
Sometimes not possible to alt tab back into game after alt tabbing out

You could try to switch to the "fake fullscreen" mode, it should solve a lot of potential issues the regular fullscreen mode has (especially concerning alt tabbing). Just go to the settings menu, disable fullscreen mode, adapt the resolution to your desktop resolution, then enable the "Undecorated" mode and save the changes. Now alt tabbing shouldn't cause any more problems
