Starting a LAN game.

I never really played games like this, so I'm trying to figure out how to get my friend to join my world. I clicked the "Open for LAN" option, but again, I'm not sure how my friend joins. I tried creating the dedicated server option, but I got lost in the process. Is there a thread that has a DETAILED explanation of how to do these two options?
