Update 0.8.5: Fishing, clothes, thunderstorms and more

A new update is now available, introducing fishing, climbing gear, clothes and more!
  • Hey folks,

A new update is now available! Main feature of this update is fishing, but it also adds various other things, like new climbing gear, new clothes, dynamite, thunderstorms and more!

This update introduces 12 catchable fishes (including special fishes such as a blobfish, a sea cucumber etc) as well as various catchable loot and other items. The fishes you can catch depend on your location, the water depth and the type of water. The game now distinguishes between saltwater and fresh water.

It is advisable to fish in deeper waters.

In order to make climbing easier, this update adds new climbing gear! This includes a basic climbing hook, but also a more advanced and much more flexible grappling gun. Use these items to climb walls, cliffs and other obstacles. Speaking of obstacles: dynamite is now available! It works in a similar way to grenades, but can blast away terrain and buildings. Dynamite can be attached to walls to make it easier to work with.

This update also introduces thunder and lightnings. This includes 5 new weather effects - including a hurricane (intense thunderstorm with heavy rain and storm). Hurricanes only occur during spring and autumn.

We've also done preparations for a future animals husbandry and taming feature. There is still some work to do, but for now, chickens will lay eggs and you can also pick up some small animals (chickens, chicks, hares and wolf cubs).

What should not be missing are minor quality-of-life changes: crafting progression is now shared in multiplayer (co-op), posters/images can be renamed, there are more separate audio volume sliders available and the settings menu now contains a search bar to quickly find a setting. In addition to this, the building grid is customizable and the "undo" command now also covers block placement.

Last but not least added 22 new clothes with this update! This includes various shirts, pants and shoes, but also two types of armor. We're still working on more clothes as well as various customization options (e.g. the ability to change the color or to attach custom icons to clothes), so stay tuned for the next updates!

Trying to update server, says already up to date

You mean SteamCMD says it's already up to date? Are you still in the unity beta branch, or the default/public branch? I've updated both, but if you're still in the unity branch, I'd recommend to disable it... somemtimes it might also help to add the validate parameter when performing the update (i.e +app_update 339010 -validate)

  • I'm in love with this game. Really appreciate the effort to make this game everytime better and with new wonderful features :wow::wow::wow:

  • Triggered the heavy thunderstorm, lasted not even two minutes before it had me almost falling asleep it sounds so nice.

Grilled corn made me hungry for it irl.

    -------

Suggestion would be add an option for fresh / saltwater in the terrain editing tools so we can manually fix the water. Just as an example, luckily all of my ponds, lakes, river, wells, etc. all switched automatically to freshwater no problem, but all of the water around my island (and assuming it would be the case for any explored / modified islands) is freshwater and not saltwater.

    -----

Didn't try the fishing because no catch / breeding / model spawning yet.

    -----

Was hoping for more blocks shapes, but oh well maybe the next update.

  • Thanks a lot for your feedback! :)

Yes, we will add this with the upcoming hotfix ;) Actually all chunks which were ever modified before are now usually freshwater (depending on when the world was created)... due to flowing water, it could be a relatively large area.

A small bug to repport: hides are now invisibles on the tanning rack :/

That's weird :wat: Is it a specific hide that's invisible? Is it still invisible when picking it up from the rack?

  • Thanks a lot for your feedback! :)

I was NOT looking forward to having to manually redo my stream and waterfall so glad it I got lucky and it defaulted to fresh water. lol

Don't kill me for asking this is more out of curiosity than anything, but now that the game has saltwater, is it eventually possible to add Sea Salt farming?

If you're not familiar with it, it's a shallow area that's flooded with a couple of inches of saltwater and then as the water evaporates the salt is raked, bagged, and dried. You could add a small flood gate with a lever to fill the pond area aka turn on / off a water source block.

That could have a lot of uses for cooking, food preservation, etc. in the future.

  • No, its not confined to a specific hide. I had left a sheep hide on the rack before the update, invisible after, but I was able to recover the leather normally. After than, I have put two different zebra hide and two rhino hide on the rack, and it was exactly the same story

  • Great work!! I am so excited about the new clothes. I have been busy making shirts, pants and shoes. Thank you so much!! I hope these new clothes also help with the overheating and freezing conditions our avatars suffer at times.

*** I would like to request, for your future updates, a couple of simple long skirts and female gowns for our female avatars. Kalephia looks good in men's clothing, but... a skirt or dress would be nice too. ;) Also, can the hood be removed from the black monk's robe? Makes it easier to see Kalephia's hair, the same way as when she wears a shirt. I know this is all silly for the average male gamer, but this lady gamer would appreciate it. :D

Thanks again for all your hard work and time in making this game even better for us.

  • Thanks for your feedback! :)

We definitely had plans back then to add ways to extract salt from seawater ^^ Since we have finally saltwater, it definitely makes sense to take a closer look at that now... although probably we'll either add food spoilage or more food items first (so there will be a reason for the player to farm salt)^^

Thanks for letting me know! I was able to reproduce it, this issue will be fixed with the upcoming hotfix :)

Hehe, yes, we will definitely add some skirts/gowns (most likely with the next update) :) We'll also prepare a variant of the robe without hood ;)

WAHOO!!! eventual salt means one step closer to PIZZA!!!! lol

We'd have use for all the veggies..

no no wait no good....we don't have pineapple in the game yet...

    <RUNS AND HIDES>

    lol

  • or BBQ suace!

granted I make a vegetarian version of this now instead of using real chicken, but I used to make a pizza with blue cheese for the sauce, grilled bbq chicken, green and red bell peppers, onions, and either jalapeno or banana peppers. Wasn't even on the menu at the pizzeria I worked at but someone saw me make it once for myself for my lunch and had so many people asking for it they added it to the menu.

BBQ sauce on pizza is definitely underrated.
