Opened my map and it was blank except for a small area around myself - all tags and notes gone too 
not sure fi tis related but also noticed in the last day the screen keeps going totally black and i have to change the item im holding to get the picture back (its not a light thing - happens when holding torch and changing to a tool fixes for example) 
Are you playing on a server? If yes did the server owner maybe change the server's full name? (Even a small dash will cause the map to be recreated. If that is the case then you can find your old map in the game's files in the maps directory, just copy the contents of the old map to the new map folder and you will have your map back)
oh yes maps are local, you need to manually copy it to the other PC
