Steam only wants to sell regardless of the work behind it. If you need financial help to continue with this wonderful game, ask the community to contribute financially so that the game continues.

Currently we definitely appreciate if someone just purchases the game (and gives it to a friend, for example), as mentioned by Avanar and Desmagu Especially if you purchase the game from our homepage (even if it's a Steam key) 
Once the game is a bit more fleshed out we will maybe also take other stores into consideration (e.g. GOG, EGS etc).

Yes, you could buy as many keys as you want and give them to friends (the keys should show up under your Licenses tab) The keys are not bound to your account, so anyone could redeem them in Steam.
