sounds like the time set on your server is wrong. january 1 1970 is the beginning of unix time and nearly every server bases its time of the number of seconds that have passed since that day.

bios and windows on my machine are correct.
don't know where steam gets that date, but it's not what anything on my system shows.

could firewall settings mixed that up ?

I just thought of something. The stats server may not know what the correct value is so its setting itself to 0 as a placeholder which would be the date in 1970.

As long as Windows is set to sync the clock to remote servers and if your timezone setting is correct, then your Windows firewall should make the correct ports open on your PC

It wouldn't hurt to check that port 37 on both TCP and UDP are open on your router.
