Movabale structures

The next update will be available on Wednesday, December 18, in the early evening (GMT+1).

This update will not yet replace the Java version, instead it is the actual content update. We'll provide more information about the transition together with the update.
  • Is there a chance that when you get to the topic of movable structures, that we can get the opportunity to build our own ball labyrinths. Here are a example from Resident Evil 8 so you can better understand what I mean exactly.

For me it would be mindblowing to create such tiny little detailed games in a game.

Changed the title of the thread from “Movebale structures” to “Movabale structures”.
  • It's definitely possible to do in unity, actually one of the tutorials for Unity used to be / still is making a ball maze game.

I think it would just have to start as a pre-formed base that already has the movement mechanics built into it and then we could just build off of that, but not sure how it would work for placing the holes, etc. It'd all depend on how Red51 decided to build it.

Did I understand you correctly that you think that mobile structures would generally be inserted via some type of building set. Thought you could “simply” give each block shape rotation setting options in the radial menu. Or something like that? I can build holes myself, or what do you mean?

I was talking about your ball mazes specifically.

Most "moveable structures" are simply pieces that swing, rotate, etc. in predetermined ways and those are easy to implement. However, ball mazes like what you were talking about require the player to move the ball sometimes in very subtle little nudges which requires a more complex set of mechanics to work.

What I was saying is that Red51 would probably have to provide a base platform that's ready to be built on that already has the movement mechanics built into it, like pressing the F key to interact with it and then using the arrow keys to tilt the board to play. The problem with that is you need to be able to have the holes in the play field for the ball traps and the shoot, etc. for the ball to fall in and back out to the player.

  • Ah, i really thought i could build everything by my own.

Ball maze puzzles are actually surprisingly complex yet simple at the same time when it comes to building them in real life, but building one in a game is actually a lot more complex under the hood.

That's not to say it couldn't be done, I actually know exactly how the model could be done to make it doable, it's just that it's something that would take a considerable amount of time and effort to do.

I think we're more likely to be able to make Rube Goldberg machines long before ball mazes could be a thing.
