Was the player maybe in a boat? That seems to be having most sync issues in mulitplayer right now...

Nope, I tried it myself. Get a map, open it up and so long as you don't close the map or stop moving forwards you can walk on water.

Please bear with me, but I was unable to reproduce this
To enable "Jesus Mode", do you activate the map edit mode (so the cursor becomes visible)?

I think the problem is more the interaction between readding map and swimming animations: We can do that too only walking continuously with an open map if we look up. But do we really need to be able to read the map while swimming?
