Game keeps freezing on Linux

A small new update is available now!
  • Not sure why but as of the new update my game keeps on freezing after about 30 minutes of playing. I had freezing before but it wasn't this bad or frequent.

Happened while opening the map (frequent freezing cause), mining rocks (also frequent) but now I was just standing on a boat doing nothing in particular.

Not sure what kind of information is needed or how I can debug, but I'm using Arch Linux Kernel 6.12.63-1-lts

    Using nvidia drivers 590.48.01

Also had the same exact issue on both desktop and laptop both freezing the same way after about 30 minutes every time, don't know if the fact my night and day cycle is set to 30 minutes is a factor, too but it would freeze during the day as well so I don't think it is

  • I'm sorry to hear about that :/ Unfortunately it's difficult to troubleshoot this kind of issue, as there is typically no error in the log... but maybe the log file contains any clues about what's going on. If the game freezes again, maybe restart it (at least to the main menu), then open the console and enter "report" (maybe add a brief description like "game freeze").

But in fact there are reports from several Linux-users who suffer from crashes... it does not affect all Linux users, but it indicates that there might be an internal issue with the current Unity version (although Linux support in Unity is horrible anyway). It might also be related to Vulkan.

However, in the meantime, you could try to run the game via Proton, that might solve the issue :)

Yeah figured it might be harsh to troubleshoot ^^

I am already using proton since I'm using the steam version, it's just odd I had freezes before but it was generally very sparce, now it seems to be timed and to happen after X amount of time independently

I'll try to see what I can do, the biggest problem is that not only the game freeze but it freezes my whole PC as well so I mostly have to hard reset when it happens. Will see if I can still make a log after though

  • Oh, I see :/ Did you enable Proton in Steam itself or specifically for RW (when right-clicking on RW in the Steam lib -> Properties)? It seems that setting it in Steam only still results in the game using the native Linux runtime 8|

But you can still send a report after restarting the PC (it's just relevant that the error/crash occurred during the last session when you played RW) :)

  • So I tried enabling proton, didn't change anything sadly. I also realized it's less than 30 minutes before the game inevitably freezes which is the oddest thing I've seen yet. This time I was just riding my horse. Either way, I booted the game back up and sent a report as instructed. I hope it can help figure out what's causing this. I really miss playing

  • Thanks a lot for the report! :) According to the report, however, it seemed that Proton was not active, instead the native Linux version (and Vulkan) was running :wat: Did you enable Proton for Rising World specifically (when right-clicking on RW in the Steam lib -> Properties)? Steam is a bit confusing in this regard (if it's only set globally in Steam, it will still launch the native Linux version of RW).

You can check if Proton is used if you enter graphics into console - if the line contains "Direct3D 11.0", Proton is active. If it contains "Vulkan" instead, the native Linux version is running.

But I'm glad to hear that it seems to be working now! :)

I'm also going to report this silly little thing where the map is misaligned. I probably should open a new thread for it, but don't want to clutter

Don't worry about creating new threads, personally I prefer separate threads actually (at least if the issues are unrelated) :D But about the map issue, that's really weird =O Not sure what could be causing this... is it an older world? Does the map always show the wrong location?

You could try to go to the world folder (the folder with the name of your world in the "Worlds" dir) and delete the "Map" folder there, then restart the game. Is the map still incorrect then?

  • I have deleted the map folder, now it seems correct but it's a completely different world layout so that's interesting haha

I guess the old map data overlapped with something else present from my previous world

Either way that's fixed too and something else I'll know for the future ^^
