I broke my install after playing with earlier beta versions

  • Out of curiosity, I loaded up some older builds of the game via selecting them under the beta menu in Steam. However, now I can no longer return to the load the latest. A terminal window pops up momentarily then disappears. I tried the repair trick in _CommonRedist but that didn't change anything

    I tried loading the jar in MING:

    zork@DESKTOP-VDHVJ40 MINGW64 /c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/RisingWorld
    $ java -jar risingworld.jar
    LOADING CLASSPATH FROM: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RisingWorld/data/classpath.xml
    EXISTS = true
    SIZE = 2203

    but all I get is a java notice saying " No arguments found"

    I tried "none" and "update under the beta tab as well. No improvement. Here is a typical log entry when i try to launch the game:

    I already tried deleting local game content via Steam and download a fresh copy. No improvement. I wish I could get more useful error info. There doesnt seem to be a /? option on the windows launcher so I'm not sure what else to do at this point. :(

  • Is there a recent file called "errorlog" or "hs_err_pid" in your game directory? If there is such a file, please post it here.
    Alternatively try to delete local game content via Steam, but also delete the Rising World folder (in steam/steamapps/common/) manually (make sure you backup your "Worlds" folder if you want to keep your old worlds). Then restart Steam, and download the latest game version again.

  • Hi Red,

    I tried all that and its still not working. No error file either. It seems as if RW isn't even launching. Is there something specific I should keep set under the BETA tab? I've tried "none" and "update" and it still does not launch.

    I dont know enough about troubleshooting Steam. I'll likely have to reinstall. Am I able to play the standalone version of the game even while I purchased from Steam? i tried launching the standalone earlier and it just stated that I haven't purchased the game yet. :(

  • Please try the "newest-old-exe - Newest Version + old exe" (we really need a better name for that^^) beta instead, does it work then?
    About the standalone, unfortunately Steam users can't use the standalone, and standalone users can't use the Steam version =/

  • That didn't work either. It seems like the 0.5.x version is now the only version which will load on my desktop computer. When i set the beta menu to anything else, it wont work. I can still load the latest 0.6.2.1 from my laptop but now Steam wont sync my save file. I've been having some other issues with my machine lately so I'll just wipe it later. I've already reinstalled Steam and that didn't fix anything so its probably something buried in the registry. I'm really not happy with Windows 10 anyways.

  • Hmm that's really strange. Maybe Steam messed something up, at least Rising World does not create any registry entries, but Steam does. Sync is also completely handled by Steam, when it does not work, it's eventually indeed related to some broken registry entries ?( Maybe try this: Open the "config.properties" file (maybe it's just called config) in your game directory with a texteditor, set "game_debug_console" to true, save the file and start the game. Once it's "crashed", please have a look if there is a log file (just has a long number in its name) in the "Logs" subfolder in your game directory.
