Problem with new game bought on steam

I just bought this game on steam, when I start the game and go in to single user mode, create world
every thing starts up fine, but when I get in and try to chop down a tree with the stone axe, it does nothing.
no sound of chopping or any other indication that it is chopping other than the animation of me moving.
I exited and came back in several times, but nothing worked. I am in survival mode.
Is this a temporary problem, or something just with my client.

Are you holding the left click for long enough for the animation to finish? The new animation is quite long so if you just click once or click and hold for shorter time than the animation needs it is not really doing anything.

Did the tree get cut even though you were not hearing the chopping sound?

Usually that works.
Were you far enough on the tree?
Did you slam about 6 times!

As @Minotorious said are you holding down the mouse button long enough for the action to take place, it's one of the most common mistakes new players make, the other is not standing close enough to the tree or not even been in front of it,

When you said no sound, do you just mean no hitting sounds or no music no wind no sounds at all total silence ?

I can hear other sounds fine such as animal noises, wind and music.
I was left clicking over and over, I could see the swing animation, but no sound and no chips flying.
Sounds like I need to hold the left button down rather than tapping to swing. Is this correct?

I am at work at the moment, but I will try it when I get home.

yes exactly the swing animation takes about 2-3 seconds to finish and actually hit the tree
