A new update is now available, introducing seasons and more!
Latest hotfix: 0.8.0.1 (2024-12-20)

    Deirde,

    Your work never ceases to amaze me. You're always pushing the building system to its limits to turn primitives into works of art.

    That didn't work either. It seems like the 0.5.x version is now the only version which will load on my desktop computer. When i set the beta menu to anything else, it wont work. I can still load the latest 0.6.2.1 from my laptop but now Steam wont sync my save file. I've been having some other issues with my machine lately so I'll just wipe it later. I've already reinstalled Steam and that didn't fix anything so its probably something buried in the registry. I'm really not happy with Windows 10 anyways.

    Hi Red,

    I tried all that and its still not working. No error file either. It seems as if RW isn't even launching. Is there something specific I should keep set under the BETA tab? I've tried "none" and "update" and it still does not launch.

    I dont know enough about troubleshooting Steam. I'll likely have to reinstall. Am I able to play the standalone version of the game even while I purchased from Steam? i tried launching the standalone earlier and it just stated that I haven't purchased the game yet. :(

    Out of curiosity, I loaded up some older builds of the game via selecting them under the beta menu in Steam. However, now I can no longer return to the load the latest. A terminal window pops up momentarily then disappears. I tried the repair trick in _CommonRedist but that didn't change anything

    I tried loading the jar in MING:

    zork@DESKTOP-VDHVJ40 MINGW64 /c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/RisingWorld
    $ java -jar risingworld.jar
    LOADING CLASSPATH FROM: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RisingWorld/data/classpath.xml
    EXISTS = true
    SIZE = 2203

    but all I get is a java notice saying " No arguments found"

    I tried "none" and "update under the beta tab as well. No improvement. Here is a typical log entry when i try to launch the game:

    I already tried deleting local game content via Steam and download a fresh copy. No improvement. I wish I could get more useful error info. There doesnt seem to be a /? option on the windows launcher so I'm not sure what else to do at this point. :(

    Yeah me too. But it is in alpha and only a handful of developers are working on this. I purchased a few other games on Steam recently so I might put this one down for a few months and come back when more things have been added. I'm really itching for biomes and water to be implemented

    From what I've read, the collision detection system needs to be re-worked which is causing much of this. It is being planned for after the biomes update which might be in the next month or so

    Red51 had an urge to make a fantasy biome so that's something to look forward to, if & when he does it.

    This is great news!
    However, if Red is reading this, if the fantasy area is going to be a biome and not a world type, it probably should be an optional when generating the world (kinda like how you can turn caves off and on). Some may not want this biome spawning if they want to just play a non-magical world.

    the only problem with floating islands is the build limit. of course if their were to be another dimension of some sorts or world file , the ground level could be lowered maybe raising the amount of air space .

    Whatever the floor and ceiling values are, are likely completely arbitrary and could be changed if needed. Ofcourse, last time I tried flying straight up, I kept going up for quite some time before I gave up and came back down again. I was wondering where the ceiling was. I haven't found floor yet because even in Hell, I can mine below the lava but the lava simply passes through solid objects so even if I create a stone tunnel into the lava, I incur damage when I try to go below the level where the lava is. I think one of Vortac's videos of an earlier build showed him flying into the lava and not incurring damage. Anyways, the point about the ceiling is that I could fly pretty darn high so it seems like there's enough space up there for floating islands. I personally like the idea of having one world instead of dimmensions like in Minecraft.

    Yes! Exactly like Avatar. A fantasy biome could incorporate unusual things like floating islands with waterfalls running off the edge (although I'm not sure if infinite water sources are planned for Rising World). Perhaps elements of the Twilight Forest mod in Minecraft could be incorporated as well such as gigantic trees you can live inside of.

    ahh yes. I recently learned of the world edit mod. That's a good idea to try and craft one. But I still think it might be a good idea to have a floating island option. Perhaps generated as part of a fantasy world type

    *bump*

    This would give things a nice worn appearance, like an old castle wall. As you mine a placed block with the pick axe, it takes on a cracked look before being destroyed. Maybe Hitting a block with the pick axe would make the block retain the cracked appearance. Or it could be recovered (rather than being destroyed) and you have a new cracked version of that block (this is closer to to what minecraft does with the mined stone blocks becoming cobble stone which actually seems like a good system).

    I found a forum under Off-topic for a game called Astra Terra. It looks like it has some floating islands in it (like minecraft and Terraria). I wonder if Red would consider adding this to Rising World as well or if he is looking for a more natural world. If floating islands could be reached, perhaps they could be mined for an unobtanium-like ore that levitates. The stone itself could have a neutral gravity setting (I'm assuming this is how tops of mountains stay up in Rising World after you mine below them). Perhaps this could be a crafting item for fantasy-themed vehicles that float (like airships in Final Fantasy). A system would have to we worked out to manipulate the gravity value on a vessel in order to make it fly.

    I realize Rising World has more of a realism appearance as far as the items so perhaps magical devices (like in Minecraft) are out of scope with what Red envisions in this game. It's just a thought.

    Thank you. :)
    No I haven't used a mod. I have given only in the console "item ore 64 8" and in addition still "world edit script" (availavle in this forum)
    for walls and ground and planted some spruce. Only a litte bit experimenting with available things in Rising World. :D

    I was unaware of the world edit script. I found it now on github. Thankyou :)

    Those look amazing! is this a mod which adds snow or do you have access to Rising World builds that the rest of us dont? As far as I know, snow is part of the upcoming biomes update.

    Sorry, I did derail the conversation a bit. I should have atleast added an /s but I thought that was obvious. Did you hear about the new Star Trek tv series coming out next year? I have high hopes for that one. It will be made by some of the people who were involved in the reboot movies but with a different cast. So rather than re-telling a story about Kirk, Picard, Sisco, or Janeway, or Archer we get to see a new story with new people in what I assume is going to be the time period of The Old Series.

    And yes, the Myst franchise with the linking books is exactly what I am referring to. There's a sequel called Uru which came out in the early 2000s which allowed you to explore Dni the city (Where Atrus was trapped in the first game) as well as the history and culture of the civilization. There is an image on a myst thread here that is a few posts down that embodies what I envision of someday seeing in Rising World:

    Here's a screenshot of part of the underground city. It really doesn't do it justice but no picture can really capture the city in its entirety since it is so massive and spans a cavern atleast several miles wide with a deep lake in the middle:

    Think those in Star Wars ep 1 during Podracing along cliffs & ravines

    I'm sorry. But I do not know this Star Wars Episode 1 film of which you speak. George Lucas toyed around with a script for such a film in the early 90s. The only Star Wars movie which George Lucas was the primary director of was Episode 4 (originally just "Star Wars" in 1977). Irvin Kershner directed Episode 5 and 6 (which were incredible films). No prequels exist and I'm looking forward to see what J.J. Abrams does with Star Wars. What he did to Star Trek was horrendous but I feel he is more suitable for directing a proper Star Wars film. December 18th is just around the corner. If he does a good job, then perhaps some day in the future there will be an Episode 1. Only then will I understand this vision of cliffs and Podracing of which you speak.

    That aside, I'm glad to know that others have dreams of Minecraft and now Rising World. Once Biomes and water are in place, I'm hoping to see some improvements to cave generation. The idea of underground settlements have always intrigued me. Have you ever played Myst Uru? That game allows you to explore the underground ruins of the Dn'i civilization. I've always dreamed of expansive caverns with oceans, similar to that in Journey To The Center Of The Earth. I'd love to see a world such as that in Rising World someday. I hope Red has some plans to implement underground water caves at some point. If we get something similar to Glowstone in Minecraft then even better :)
