Sorry if a dumb question but how can I make planks?
The closest I can get is to resize a block but it doesnt really get thin enough.

Do you refer to unity? I this case you just need to use shift+arrow keys and pgup/dn

Did you try changing grid size (G) with numpad + or - ? I think the smallest grid size 1 & 2 is thin enough for planks. I use 1 for designing wall patterns/art.

You can change size up to 0.01 units, you need to open a radial menu ('C' by default), chose scale and change it from 0.1 to 0.01, after that you can make any element much smaller
