Change to Grid System?

  • I haven't built in this game for 3-4 months. I've come back to build and have come across something new for me. When I place a block using only the Grid system, the blocks now align to one corner of the grid square. Previously, they were always centered. This really affects my construction process. I am not referring to using Modular Snapping or Manual Positioning. Previously, a block was always centered in a grid square. So in a grid square that is 1 x 1, a block that is 0.7 x 1 x 0.7 would automatically place in the middle (centered) in the grid square. Now it doesn't, it aligns to one corner.

Is there a setting to change this?

    Is this a new feature?

Thank you for your assistance! :)

  • room6675 Thank you for the response. That is a horrible update in my opinion! For many things Modular Snapping does not help at all. red51 We need the Grid system to have the option to center an object in the center of a grid square. My primary tool for building is the Grid system, and now it is useless for me. :(

Hey, i just saw your post.

i rarely build with grid at all. Maybe you can look into how others build? Building is absolutely possible without grid at all.

Let the community know where is your issue and we all together might be able to help you :)

  • +/- adjusts the grid in binary steps. Simply instead of one block grid use half block grids. This allows you to snap to centers, or even smaller grids if you want finer control.

that only helps in some cases. if you use a block i.e. 0.25 x 0.25 it won´t help you. neither if the block is i.e. 0.57 x 0.93

But in my opinion the grids biggest use is to start a building in allignment with the world direction, so you are not building diagonal. But aside that i see almost no use for it other than causing confusion. Most people it helps in the beginning as its more Minecraft-like but once people discover the magnet function and free placement possibilities they take the Grid as standard and get confused when grid-system and magnet-system collide. They think its a bug in the game and get annoyed. And instead of learning the awesome building system of RW they keep using the Grid because its the path of least resistance, but they do get frustrated because they are not able to create the really detailled buildings and constructions of others.

I see the grid as a kind of learn-to-walk-help. But once you can walk you should not rely on it anymore.

I know that others, i.e. Deirdre, still use it and are true masters in building, though i admit i do not know how and to what advantage they use it.

  • The feature is binary grid steps so it can do .25 grid just as well as .5 grid though not sure how fine it goes I doubt it is 0.01 grid. And for the odd block size that is indeed where you snap to other blocks rather than grid. I think they should have block face snapping as the default to promote the better building method, but can see they want to avoid minecrafters complaints about block grid hidden as non default.

  • Sorry for responding so late, but the next update will indeed change the grid behaviour :)

I want to give a bit of background information about why the grid behaviour was changed: The problem with the old grid behaviour was that the position was always based on a 1x1 block. For example, if you had a 0.5x0.5 block and a 0.5 grid size, it aligned like this:

If you had a 0.25x0.25 block and a 0.25 grid size, it looked like this:

The same applied to a 2x2 block, which didn't align well to the grid:

The previous update tried to fix these situations. Unfortunately it had the side effect that if you wanted to place a 0.5x0.5 block in a grid with a size of 1, it was no longer centered. Of course this is also problematic...

With the upcoming update, we want to try to fix both situations: If the block size is less or equal the size of the grid (e.g. if you want to place a 0.5x0.5 block in a grid with a size of 1), it will be centered. Otherwise it will try to align to the grid. IMHO that should be the best compromise.

However, we'll also add an option to switch back to the old grid behaviour (in case the new grid behaviour is still causing trouble) ^^

  • Change of thinking, it is not about snapping the center of the thing (not just blocks but game objects too) to be placed on grid or the center of a grid.

This impacts placement of objects that you want to have flush with walls that are bounded on grids not centered on grids. The bounding box of the object should not let any part of the object stick out so it can be pushed flush against the wall. Then depending on which way the object is moving you snap that bounding edge of the object to the grid. Everything in my base has a huge walking space behind the objects because I cannot snap them to the walls without parts sinking into the walls.

Even putting a block into flat terrain it wants to center the block so it is half into terrain forcing a foundation when maybe that is not what you want - and if you do want it you should excavate like IRL and do it manually. Instead want the bottom of the block to snap to the terrain surface. I suspect this is currrently not done to avoid people placing floor blocks flush with terrain to avoid texture fighting (dirt vs. block) - but that is what a 0.1g floor layer placed on terrain can fix.

So it needs a couple options - snap to object center vs. snap to object bounds, and snap to grid lines vs. grid center.
