Horses passing away

A new update (0.9.2) is available now!
Latest Hotfix: 0.9.2.1 (2026-05-13)
  • Went out to see my male horse laying on the ground during the day in front of an opening to a barn, same situation yesterday with another male horse on the same type building, cos I keep my males away from my mares when I don't want them breeding, what I'm wondering is, most have told me horses don't die, yet I've had two die in the past 3 weeks, is there something I don't know? I find it odd, none of my friends have had this happen? Seeking info that I might not know cos it bugs me

  • Hmm... basically horses (or other animals) should not die of old age... they can only die if they get damage (fall damage, touching fire, getting attacked by a player etc) :|

If there is a cave right below the horses, are they maybe there (just in case they fell through the ground for some reason)?

Otherwise you could also try the findmount console command (you can open the console by pressing ` or ~). This will highlight the position of the last mount (but this only worked if you didn't use another mount in the meantime)

  • The horse was actually laying on the ground, I have a pic of it, but it's odd it has happened twice with the same building but in 2 different places, I have the building down twice, and both horses died in the very same spot. I do find this odd for sure

  • Okay—if that really is my stable building, the floor surface poses a problem for the horses. When they try to enter the stable, they are instantly teleported onto the roof and can't get back down.

I haven't been able to determine to what extent this kills them (neither while sleeping on the roof nor in the doorway)

I would suggest removing the block floor and painting over the terrain with "forest floor."

  • Yes that is the building I love it, it works great for small animals, and while you can't ride the horse into the building I thought the door enough had clearance to allow them able to do so. They did end up on the roof, and then I tried another smaller building with no floor attached to it and they ended up on the roof as well. So now I'm using a lean to type and that seems to be fine. However on another creative map now that you mention the situation I do believe I have the building down for cows, I have seen a bull inside and they haven't popped on the roof but I'm sure it could happen, it seems to whenever the animal gets clipped into a certain position?

Edited once, last by teddiebear80: SonoBionda thank you for figuring it out I would have never thought it was the building itself ().

  • You could also try scaling up the blueprint—by about 10 to 20 percent—and definitely avoid using the block base (since it sticks out of the ground to remain visible, and that seems to be a tripping hazard for horses).

  • Hmm... unfortunately it's hard to tell why the horse died  Maybe I can add a way to find out the reason of death for an animal (that might help to find out if it was killed by a player or died due to damage etc).

Right now horses can only die in these cases:

    • Player hits/attacks the horse
    • Projectile hits the horse
    • Horse is close to an explosion
    • Fall damage (>5 blocks, always deadly if >= 30 blocks)
    • Horse touches fire
    • Horse touches lava (hell)
    • Horse steps into a trap (bear trap)
    • Horse drowns in water
    • Horse gets stuck in terrain for too long

If there wasn't another player who killed the horse, I can only imagine that fall damage was responsible for that (or the horse got stuck in terrain, or more precisely, below terain for too long, but that's a bit unlikely)...

Okay—if that really is my stable building, the floor surface poses a problem for the horses. When they try to enter the stable, they are instantly teleported onto the roof and can't get back down.

This is unfortunately a bug... this already happened before, but got worse with the last update (especially affecting horses) :/ Maybe that's the reason why the horse died (i.e maybe it fell off the roof)? Anyway, this bug will be fixed with the next update :)
