It has often been very useful for me to play Rising World, and then, when night falls, wait it out while doing tasks I need to do, only to return to play when day breaks. In servers, this is possible. Time continues to run even if you tabbed out to something else for a while. But in singleplayer, even when you have the option to not pause the game when in a menu, if you tab out, the game stops running. I would like an option for singleplayer to run like a server so that time keeps moving even when you're just chilling at your virtual home while you tab out to do something else. I think it'd be a good option, as that means that plants and crops will be growing and weather changing. Thanks!
Please let us have an option to keep the game running in the background!

Why don't you just go to sleep and skip the night?
-
Because I want to afk and have the night pass, basically. It's basically a good time to take a break from the screen, and it's inherently timed by the time passing in the game.

You can take a break any time though

I understand what you mean bluewind95
In single-player, when you tab away from the game, it loses focus and pauses. That’s normal behaviour.
What you’re describing is the ability to, for example, plant a tree, tab out to do something else (like emails), then return later and find that the tree has continued to grow.
I can’t see that mechanic changing in the short term.
As a workaround, you can set up a local server instead. There’s no need to open any ports on your router — just connect to it yourself using the loopback address (127.0.0.1). That way, the game continues running even when you tab out, and only you can access the server.

Additional: setting up a server is very simple.
Download SteamCMD: https://developer.valvesoftwar…mCMD#Downloading_SteamCMD
Run SteamCMD on your PC and enter this on the SteamCMD consolelogin anonymous
app_update 339010
This will download and install the RW server locally. Then just connect using port 127.0.0.1 -
As far as I know, plants continue to grow even when you're offline. Therefore, it's unnecessary to leave the game running just so the plants can grow.
red51 Is that correct?
Of course, this might be handled differently on some servers.
yes. in servers. I want the same in singleplayer.

Yes, but time won't move on. It's not the same. It doesn't keep me moving.

Yes! Exactly! I want to tab-out, do other things, and time keeps running and when I come back, things have happened, it's daylight out and I keep playing. It works great with my brain, and it helps me work in spite of fatigue. I wish that mechanic worked in singleplayer. You have the option to not pause the game in-menu, and I was hoping that'd mean it'd keep working in the background. But alas, no.
I might have to do the server thing. It's really not ideal, but what can I do? If I do this in servers, then people complain because I don't want to skip the night, or I have to skip the night for them, but that breaks my workflow.

I don't understand; you can simply switch windows and bring a different program to the foreground (while the program in the other window continues running).
Win = Ctrl+Tab, Linux = Alt+Tab
-
SonoBionda In single-player mode, switching to another window causes the game to lose focus and pause, as is typical for most single-player games.
At present, the only workaround is to run a localised server.
Given current priorities, this edge-case behaviour would likely be a misplacement of development resources for JIW Games.

I've never noticed that before - probably if I only switch briefly.

it would appear that if instead you select your world and then click play with friends tabbing out does not pause the game!

Do this then @bluewind95

I don't think I've been on SP since 2017

lol same.

Sorry for my late response, but there is actually a setting for this
Unfortunately it's not exposed to the settings menu... you can set it by opening the "config.properties" file in the game directory with a text editor and setting Game_RunInBackground to True, then save the file and launch the game again - now the game should no longer pause when losing focus.Having said that, if it's just about plants, they will still continue to grow if the game lost focus

Not sure if this will help, but I go into window mode, hit esc to release my mouse, and then go online or do other stuff and the game runs in real time. Or it seems to because i can hear it raining then stop and the daylight has faded.
-
Is it just the screen rendering that is paused then red51 I assumed the main game thread was paused.
It does indeed pause the main thread
The game also pauses a few other things (e.g. clientside npc handling etc), but some stuff like cooking food, plant growth etc will still continue to work

Could a person use an older RW world?
